Delta Govt to recover illegal charges on council accounts

The Government of Delta State has set up a committee on verification and recovery of what it describes as wrongful bank charges on the accounts of the local government councils in the state from 2007 to 2017.
The State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr Joyce Overah, made this known today, Wednesday, 15/8/2018, in Asaba while briefing newsmen on measures put in place to sanitize the activities of the third tier of government.
“The Governor has graciously approved that a committee of qualified personnel be set up in the office of the Auditor-General (Local Government} to carry out bank duty verification for the recovery of excess bank charges imposed on the accounts of the local government councils. The work of the committee is ongoing. We hope the committee generates its report fast,’’ Overah said.
He announced that the committee comprising qualified personnel was expected to carry out the forensic audit within the specified time frame and generate a report with which the illegal bank charges would be recovered with interest for the local government councils in the state.
The Commissioner said that his directorate through the prompt disbursement of funds received from the Federation Accounts to the councils had helped to avert conflicts that could have arisen from delay in payment of such funds to councils’ workers and traditional rulers.
He said that the funds released had also assisted in the execution of many people-oriented projects such as markets, water schemes, roads by local government councils.
Mr. Overah added that over N150 million was approved for the State Directorate of Local Government Affairs for execution of capital projects for 2018 fiscal year.
