The pan-Delta Development support group, Delta Stability Forum (DSF) has expressed disgust against the attempt to assassinate the Governorship candidate of Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
Expressing its disapproval to the recourse of politicians to the use of violence attacks against political opponents, DSF in a Press Release with the above title condemned the attack and called on the perpetrators not upturn the peace that Deltans and other residents enjoy in the state.
The DSF statement reads:
The Delta Stability Forum (DSF) views with apprehension reports of the failed attempt by gun men to assassinate the Delta state Governorship Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
Thanking the Almighty God for shielding the governorship candidate from the dastardly intentions of the gun men and their sponsors, DSF in a statement condemned the vile attempt on the life of the frontline governorship candidate, stating that it is surprised that in 21st century Nigeria, there are those who see politics and political contest, not as a pleasant struggle between opposing individuals, political parties and organisations, but as a do or die affair.
Taking serious view of the recourse of politicians to violence, as a way of settling political scores rather than going through the world recognised democratic process of competitive elections, delivered in free, fair and credible processes, DSF stated that it takes the thoughts of demented minds that are profoundly evil, immoral, malicious and devilish to take such action.
We join every Deltan and persons living in the state in condemning this mean, treacherous and cowardly act. Those behind it are obviously enemies of the state.
Also, we call on all political parties in the state to call their supporters and members to order by restraining and dissuading them from getting unnecessarily overzealous and enjoining them to see politics and political contest as a game between brothers and sisters, friends and associates from which a winner must emerge. Those who are not successful must see themselves as gallant losers, who can be available for contest next time around. And at the end of it all, we must return and remain as friends, associates, brothers and sisters. Resort to intimidate and pry on the life of opponents is uncalled for and so unacceptable in Delta.
Delta has always been a peaceful and resourceful and secure State and the wish of the peace loving majority Deltans is for the state to remain peaceful. It is against this background that DSF calls on the Delta Police Command and other security agencies to enhance their security architecture in the state to forestall the evil intentions of devilish politicians. The security agencies should put in place dragnets to fish out, arrest and prosecute those behind the gun ambush of the PDP governorship candidate.
Also, candidates must scrutinize their internal security mechanisms and ensure that they are not infiltrated by enemies who pose as loyalists, but who send reports elsewhere for monstrous and villainous intentions.
God bless Delta State, the Big Heart and Finger of God.
