Profile of our Publisher/ Editor-in-Chief

With Journalism experience spanning over 40 years, our Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Chukwudi Abiandu has had very productive newsroom experiences beginning with his industrial training at the Daily Times of Nigeria, cutting his proverbial journalism teeth at the prestigious Times Newspaper Training Centre (now Times Journalism Institute), Iganmu, Surulere, Lagos in 1981.

He joined The Guardian Newspaper at inception in February, 1983 as pioneer sub-editor, rising at various times to serve as Deputy Editor/Chief sub-editor, Guardian Express, an afternoon newspaper in the stable of Guardian Newspapers Limited; Katsina State Correspondent; correspondent, Lagos desk; Senior Political Correspondent and Acting News Editor.

He left The Guardian in 2,000 after eighteen and half years service to pioneer Daily Independent as Deputy Political Editor, serving subsequently in substantive capacities as News Editor, Group Politics Editor, Night Editor and Acting Editor.

He resigned from Daily Independent and went into business. He became President/Chief Executive Officer, Chukson Limited, a conglomerate he founded with interest in Public Relations, Media Consultancy, and Human Resource Management Trainer, fish farming and general business.

Mr. Abiandu was appointed Special Assistant to the Honourable commissioner for Information, Delta State in 2006, and later Special Assistant to the Honourable commissioner for Health. He had a stint as part-time lecturer in journalism at the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Asaba chapter, and was consultant to many companies including Korporate Image Planners (KIP), in Opebi, Ikeja Lagos, Professional Placement Limited (PPL), Asaba, now defunct, and Delta State Printing and Publishing Company Limited (DPPCL), publishers of The Pointer stable of newspapers, where he was also a visiting member of the newspaper’s Editorial Board. He was also media consultant to politicians and other corporate entities.

He has presented papers at many journalism and communications training fora, including seminar papers for staff training for Delta state House of Assembly Service Commission, Delta State Local Government Service commission, Ministry of Information, DPPCL, and the Directorate of Establishment, Asaba.

Mr. Abiandu served as Special Assistant in the Directorate of Public Affairs in the Uduaghan Campaign Organisation, and subsequently Special Assistant in the Directorate of Media and Public affairs, PDP Campaign Council, Delta state in 2010. He was also a part of the PDP Campaign Council, Asaba which campaigned and installed Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa as Governor of Delta State in 2015.

He holds an Honours’ Degree in Mass Communication from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, and a Diploma in Journalism. He was at the faculty of Law, University of Lagos, Akoka where he studied and earned a Diploma in Business Law. He has attended many international and advanced courses in journalism and media in Nigeria and overseas.

For instance, in 1994, he attended a workshop for Nigerian professionals in journalism excellence administered by the Centre for Foreign Journalists of Reston, Virginia, USA.

In June 2002, he obtained the BBC World Service Certificate on completion of a training workshop on Online Journalism with funding from the European Commission. He also attended a UN sponsored programme at Naivasha Resort, Nairobi, Kenya on proper reporting of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Between 23 and 27 September, 2013, Chukwudi Abiandu was at the prestigious Thomson Reuters Foundation, Canary Wharf, London, and received a certificate on successful completion of Investigative Reporting Course. It was a programme sponsored by the Delta State Government.

At the Ambrose Alli University, Mass Communication Department, he wrote his project titled: The Role of Public Relations in Organizational Effectiveness.

Chukwudi Abiandu is a devoted Christian, and a Deacon of Living Faith Church (Winners’ Chapel), Ibusa Road, Asaba. In the church, he has served in various capacities at different times as Home cell leader, leader, Follow- up Unit, member of the Covenant Squad, zonal leader Winners’ Satellite Fellowship, leader at various times of Group 5 and 9 of the Deacons Assembly and one time chairman, production committee of the Press Unit of the church.

He is married with six children. He loves reading, especially Christian books, watching and listening to anointed gospel preachers and singers. He loves sports and traveling for leisure.

He is the publisher of banneronlinenews.com, an online news outfit and the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Banner Christian Magazine.

He hails from Igbodo in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State of Nigeria.
